The City of Aarhus will, in cooperation with Realdania and Realea A/S, build the most innovative parking facility in Denmark at Aarhus Harbour. The facility will become the first automatic car park in Aarhus and will offer space for 1000 cars. The car park will be Europe’s largest automatic parking facility.
The parking facility will be built in relation with the construction of Mediaspace on the southern bastion across from Europaplads and the mouth of the river. The facility will be centrally situated in relation to the city centre. Expected users of the facility are people visiting Mediaspace, attending events at the harbour, going to the theatre or just heading for the shopping streets.
The project partners have chosen to establish an automatic parking facility as this holds a wide range of advantages over traditional parking facilities. The driver does not have to move around a dark underground parking facility. Instead, the car is delivered and collected in an attractive and bright environment with a view of the city and the water, from where the car is transported automatically to a space in the underground facility.
Furthermore, an automatic parking facility makes better use of space, as the height of each floor is approximately half the height of floors in a traditional underground parking facility. At the same time, the facility protects cars better from the elements, and as there is no access to the parked cars, car owners avoid theft and vandalism. The facility will be designed to be easy to use for disabled people. There will also be a number of spaces for special parking including disability parking for larger cars.
